Thomas Sullivan is a social anthropology PhD student at the University of Manchester, UK, finishing a thesis on eclectic spirituality in the North of England. Thomas’ research focuses on models, cosmologies, and systems of thought regarding the Earth and its position within a wider universe. Models of the climate, astronomy, weather, secular and religious models of interconnection, and the phenomenalistic experience of living on Earth are topics that stretch beyond clear disciplinary boundaries. His thesis is an acceleration of recursive analysis, creating a multitude of specific anthropological methods for specific spiritual practices directly from the thought of his interlocutors, developing a “black hole anthropology” that shapes anthropology from within his interlocutors’ open ended spiritual cosmos. These black hole anthropologies remove the borders between anthropological thought and the field. This is part of an ongoing de-potentialisation of anthropology, working towards a practice of constructing new futures. The diversity of contemporary spirituality is represented in the thesis, which covers astrology, ecstatic dance, tantra, (neo)shamanism, cartomancy and divination, and sound healing. This research goes beyond formal academic publications. Thomas is engaged in pushing anthropology beyond institutional boundaries and is a founding member of Manchester-based art collective STUDIO SCUM ([instagram.com/studioscum](https://www.instagram.com/studioscum/)). STUDIO SCUM are working within the contemporary avant-garde art movement to engage directly with alternatives to dominant forms of art production and distribution, and Thomas’ contribution is to produce texts outside of conventional forms of writing and bring text into such alternative spaces. - Instagram: [@anthropology.jpg](https://www.instagram.com/anthropology.jpg/) - Twitter: [@anthropologyjpg](https://twitter.com/anthropologyjpg) - Website: [tmsullivan.co.uk](https://tmsullivan.co.uk/)
